County Historical Society January: Old photograph month. Bring your old photographs to the house. We will scan them into the computer, put names, places, and dates with them and return them to you. We will also provide you with a CD containing the photos. See the Events page for updates. February: Black History Month. We will celebrate the contributions African Americans have made to Louisa. We also will help any family begin their search of available records for information about their ancestors. We will continue our oral history program. We hope to sponsor, jointly with the NAACP, a speaker of national prominence. See the Events page for updates. March: Place Name Month (or Surname month?). We invite anyone living in the various “place name communities” such as Pendleton, Fredricks Hall, Bumpass, Gum Spring, etc to come share any kind of historic information they may have about these communities. We will have our digital video equipment set up to record accounts of life in these communities for our Oral History archives. Saturday, March 24th, will be “Louisa Community Day” for oral histories of these communities. April: Louisa’s Native Americans Month. Special exhibits will feature information about the history of native people who lived in Louisa. We invite anyone to bring stone tools or other artifacts to the house. A special traveling exhibit will be featured. May: Jamestowne and Court Days Month. An exhibit at the Sargeant Museum will feature artifacts and information about the Jamestowne settlement. There will be a special interactive program for all age groups presented by an historical interpreter trained at the Jamestowne Settlement Park. June: Organizations Month. Louisa organizations are invited to the house to set up exhibits. The Garden Club, DAR, UDC, Sons of Confederate Veterans, etc. Each weekend will feature a sponsored picnic. July: “Celebrating the Spirit of Independence” Month. Come hear a re-enactment of young Patrick Henry and Louisa’s Dabney Carr addressing residents of newly founded Louisa County. This month will focus on life and the brewing political tensions in Louisa County at the time of the American Revolution through special exhibits, films and lectures. August: Young Artists Month. Children of all ages will be invited to exhibit their art with a history theme in our gallery. Prizes will be awarded. Historical movies of interest to children will be shown in our theatre at announced times. The Sargeant Museum official ribbon cutting will be held. September: Historical Music, Instruments, and Entertainment. Musicians will play period music on period instruments each weekend at the house. Colonial period dances will also be performed. October: Transportation through Time: Changes in transportation through the history of Louisa will be featured in a special exhibit. The end of the month will feature an antique car exhibit. November: “Old Home Places of Louisa” Exhibit. A special multi-media exhibit and photographic display of early homes in Louisa will be featured. Details of family ownership, chain of owners, family cemeteries, and more will be discussed by a featured speaker. December: Dreaming of a White Christmas. The house will be decorated for Christmas. A special reception will be held for Society members. Exhibits with a “Louisa Christmas” theme will invite everyone to share their Christmas photographs. The Society will match all donations of members to the Santa Council. |
